- Intel PR440FX motherboard, dual socket 8, comes with one
PentiumPro with 256K cache running at 200 MHz. So, you can
have a dual PPro system for the cost of another 200 MHz PPro
and a part called a VRM (voltage regulator module, apparently
costs about $50). You could check www.pricewatch.com for
places that have 256K 200MHz PPro's in stock (prices seem to
be under $300). If you do buy a second CPU, you should sure
it's the right "stepping" of the chip (you want to match the
PPro that is already in the machine) or you may have problems.
The VRM is available by calling "VXI" at 503-652-7300 and asking
for part 073-20713-01 (or Intel's part number of 656622-001).
The VRM is also available from
http://www.top-priority.com/. I got mine from
www.computer123.com (it's listed under "pentium cpu")
- I was able to find CPU fans which have the proper connectors to hook up
to the motherboard and feedback fan speed. I got mine at www.coolerguys.com.
- Micropolis 4345WS (4.2 GB Wide SCSI, the controller does support
ultra-wide drives). The hard disk was setup as three FAT
partitions. Internal SCSI ribbon cable has connectors for
four or five more drives. No external SCSI connector. Note
that there is a firmware upgrade for the drive which solves
problems that *some* of these drives have.
http://www.addit.de/SUPPORT/micr-eproms.htm has that firmware
upgrade, download file X502_4.exe. You then have to go to the
adaptec web site and get instructions on making an ASPI floppy.
Jumper settings from the drive are
here
(local mirror)
- Adaptec 7880P (scsi controller) on motherboard
Note: There is no external scsi connector. I created one by using
a Black Box item EVNSCT22 50 pin IDC to scsi-2
db50 card edge adaptor with the 68->50 pin adaptor that came with the machine.
- Toshiba XM-5702B CD-ROM drive (12X IDE)
- Logitech 3-button PS/2 mouse (toshiba badged)
- clone keyboard (reasonably nice) (toshiba badged)
- CS4236B on motherboard (sound chip), no internal speaker.
Note: this is supported by OSS on linux.
- Ether Express Pro 100B on motherboard (10BaseT and 100BaseT).
- ATI 3D Rage II+ PCI card, 2 MB RAM, can hold 2 more meg.
- Includes sensors for things like internal temperature.
- Assorted power-saving features (which you can turn off in
BIOS, if you don't want them).
- Comes with one 32meg 60ns EDO ECC DIMM (ie, RAM).
The 32meg DIMM that it comes with is rated for 60 ns, but the BIOS also
has a setting for 50 ns parts. The machine has four slots, and can take up
to 512meg of RAM. Intel's motherboard manual says that it supports:
- 168-pin 3.3V DIMMS with gold-plated contacts
- 50 ns and 60 ns buffered asynchronous EDO memory
- Parity and ECC memory
- 2 MB x 72 (16 MB), 4 MB x 72 (32 MB), 8 MB x 72 (64 MB)
and 16 MB x 72 (128 MB) modules
- 3.5" floppy
- WinNT 4.0 CD, service pack 2
- Toshiba rescue CD (which includes everything that was
initially installed on the hard disk).
